If I believe that a person is having a panic attack, what ought I to do?
Listen to what they have to say and elucidate from them if they understand what is going on. Find out if this has happened to them before. If it has then you will need to talk them down from their excited state.
Give them your name and try to use their first name too.
What about if I am not clear as to whether there is something serious going on or if it is all just a panicker?
It is sometimes difficult to distinguish a heart attack from a panic attack. Even doctors need to use diagnostic tests to help them make the distinction - so you will need to make a judgement.
Remember your A, B, Cs in terms of basic first aid. Have a look for any medic alert bracelets. Obviously, heed any advice given by the alert. Sometimes you need to call in the cavalry, just to stay safe.
OK - but if they are having a panic attack - then what do I do?
Firstly you must stay calm. Try to get one or two key ideas across, with the words that you use. Reassure the person that they will be fine and try to explain to them what is happening. They may come up with some good ideas. Never belittle them - you need them to become resourceful. Being frightened can be life saving.
However, in the incorrect circumstances it can be unhelpful and at times embarrassing.
