Treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been shown by studies to be the best available treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) treatment. It has been proven to have a higher success rate than prescription drugs and it does not have any unwanted side effects. Generalized anxiety will often also be accompanied by depression. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is great as it is able to deal with both the anxiety and the depression. CBT techniques have been used extensively in the successful self help program called Panic Away.

You can either teach yourself CBT from a self help program or you can see a cognitive behavioral therapist. CBT is all about learning to focus on your day to day experiences and observing how you respond to them. By doing this you learn to reduce the level of anxiety that you experience. Repeated exposure to experiences that cause your anxiety will enable you to understand the negative beliefs that you have and transform them so that they cease to make you anxious. You will learn how to create new positive beliefs for yourself that will cancel out the old negative anxiety causing beliefs. One of the techniques you will often be taught is exposure therapy where you face your fears in order to experience they aren’t as theatening as you thought they were.

As well as therapy you would do well to make positive changes in your life as GAD is often triggered by everyday worries. Physical exercise for example helps to relieve tension and it’s a lot harder to worry about your health if your are actually feeling healthy. Healthy eating will improve your overall sense of well-being and will help to reduce your anxiety. Money is another big worry for many anxiety sufferers so seeking financial advice may help you to manage your money better and give you less to worry about.

It might help to remind yourself of the fact that you are capable of achieving so much more with your life and that you can achieve your goals. If you have no hope for a more positive future for yourself then that will only increase your anxiety. There’s a great documentary movie called “The Secret” which is a great way to put yourself in a good mood. It’s the perfect movie for showing you how you can change your life through changing your thoughts and beliefs.
