Dealing with the loss of someone close to us can be very difficult for anyone to handle. When my girlfriend’s mom died of course it was devastating. Shortly after her mom’s passing she started to realize how much she was forgetting things. Being a perfectionist, super organized and always on the ball forgetting things really started to make her feel uneasy. If an appointment was forgotten or she misplaced her keys, any of those simple things would fling her into a violent panic attack. However, she immediately thought that this forgetfulness must be from some sort of undiagnosed disease and then those thoughts would attack her… what if it’s a brain tumor or cancer? What if I die? Why can’t I get this Panic away from me?
The longer it went on the more she felt scatter-brained, unsure of herself and unable to concentrate on much. Her irrational, obsessive thoughts would make her spiral out of control and her anxiety attacks were frightening. On the internet for several hours she would be trying to find out which disease sounded like hers. She was certain she was going crazy. She didn’t even want to talk about it with any of her family or friends fearing that they would all think she’s crazy too. She was scared.
Death is a huge tragedy and grieving is normal and takes time. It’s not uncommon to feel forgetful, overwhelmed or scatter-brained. Because her mind couldn’t think logically at the time, she became obsessed running to the doctor every time she’d forget something, her obsessive thoughts seemed completely normal. When the doctor diagnosed her with General Anxiety Disorder she was happy because she felt relief but scared because she didn’t know how to make her anxiety go away.
The fear of dying was the root of her anxiety, especially since having her mother die. Having a fear of something sets off anxiety or panic. Do you suffer from panic or anxiety?
